Are you overwhelmed by the global scale of environmental issues? If so, just focus on your own back yard – or at least your own country. If you live in England, join Stop the Drop, a new three-year campaign from Bill Bryson, author and president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). Note: city slickers don't click off. The campaign aims to tackle litter and fly-tipping problems in cities, towns and villages as well as the countryside.

If like me, you've ever tried to wage a DIY campaign to stop litterbugs in their tracks, you'll love Stop the Drop. After all, there's no danger to life and limb, simply click here to get involved and help England's green and pleasant land stay just that. Or 'return' to just that.

After all, the country is covered in rubbish, and London is now the dirtiest city in Europe, according to a survey by TripAdvisor. The Keep Britain Tidy campaign (which supports Stop the Drop) found 40% more of our nation blighted by litter than three years ago. Keep Britain Tidy has launched campaigns against car litter, and this month launched a public campaign to stamp out cigarette litter (exacerbated by the smoking ban) by ‘dumping’ a 30 foot cigarette butt in the middle of Trafalgar Square.

With Stop the Drop, Bryson and the CPRE are battling for hearts and minds. After all, though overpackaging is a huge problem, and fast-food outlets and supermarkets need to curb their enthusiasm for all things packed and shrink-wrapped in plastic, ultimately the responsibility lies with each individual. Littering needs to become as socially unacceptable as farting in a lift or blaring music from your headphones in a public place. Errr... perhaps after Mr Bryson's knocked some sense into the litterbugs, he could turn his attention to noise pollution...
